Desiree’s Story

“I felt like I wasn’t good enough” (Desiree, 2024). A soundtrack many of us have in our minds and one Desiree couldn’t shake. Desiree has been attending church for most of her life. However, she struggled keeping her faith intact during her teenage years; battling her self-worth and shame caused her to feel isolated, distant and depressed, like her problems were insignificant and that she was too far gone. After 10 years of being stuck in a cycle and unable to leave home, shutting down internally – she reached an all time low where she didn’t know where else to turn. Then she had a moment where a little voice at the back of her mind said, why not ask God to help? She prayed: to make connections with people, to learn about the Bible and to truly understand God’s love.

Then in April 2024, Desiree attended Alpha. She was understandably worried at first, not knowing what to expect. But with the aid of her mom who came along with her and the hosts at her table, she grew more comfortable with each discussion. Everyone at her table came from such different backgrounds and faith walks and their vulnerability made it a relatable experience. It helped ease Desiree’s anxieties, and she began looking forward to every session. There was no right or wrong answer, everyone could share exactly where they were which gave her confidence to share her stories with others. Eventually, with prayer and determination Desiree found the courage to go to the sessions without her mom and on her own. She even noticed that she was contributing to conversation when she initially thought she wouldn’t even talk. One session, in particular, she encountered God’s love like she hadn’t before. And from then on has experienced so much healthy change: with her mental health and strong relationship in God. Recently, Desiree took the step of following Jesus through baptism, an outward expression of her inward decision.

As she continues along this journey, Desiree has been actively serving in our OneChurch.to community. She also plans on serving for the next Alpha sessions as a facilitator. One advice Desiree wants to impart for people looking for a community: “If you feel uncomfortable in these environments, ask for help and have someone to go with. You are never meant to walk this journey alone” (Desiree, 2024). She leaves us with this, “He’s forever waiting, with his hand stretched out, it’s not too late. He hears, He’s the best” (Desiree, 2024).

While every one of us will experience moments of being alone, we are designed for connection. Join us for our Alone Series, to find out more.
